A forehead lift, also known as a brow lift, is a surgical procedure designed to restore a more youthful, refreshed appearance to the upper face by addressing sagging brows, deep forehead lines, and frown lines between the eyes. At CARE Plastic Surgery, Dr. Brian Coan utilizes advanced techniques to achieve natural-looking results tailored to each patient’s unique facial structure and aesthetic goals. The procedure is often performed endoscopically through small incisions hidden in the hairline of your scalp. A brow lift can be done alone or combined with other facial procedures, such as a facelift, blepharoplasty (eyelid lift), or laser skin resurfacing. Recovery from a brow lift is typically quite manageable, with most patients taking about one week off from work (depending on the nature of one’s job). It is important to note that patients are required to refrain from exercise or other strenuous activities for six weeks following surgery.
Benefits of a Forehead Lift/Brow Lift
Over time, the natural aging process, gravity, and muscle activity can lead to drooping eyebrows, deep creases on the forehead, and frown lines that may make you appear tired, angry, or older than you feel. Genetics can also play a role, as well. A brow lift can:
- Elevate sagging brows for a more youthful, alert appearance.
- Smooth deep forehead lines and frown lines.
- Improve symmetry between the eyebrows.
- Create a more relaxed and approachable facial expression.
Types of Brow Lift/Forehead Lift Procedures
There are several types of brow lifts, each with different techniques to lift and reposition the brows and smooth out the forehead. The best choice depends on the patient’s facial anatomy, the degree of brow sagging, and the desired outcome. Below are the various types of brow lifts:
Traditional Brow Lift (Coronal Brow Lift)
The traditional surgical brow lift, also known as a coronal brow lift, is ideal for patients with significant forehead sagging and deep wrinkles. This method involves a longer incision along the hairline to lift the forehead, smooth wrinkles, and reposition the brows. Incisions are closed with sutures and/or staples. It offers long-lasting results but has a longer recovery time compared to less invasive techniques.
Endoscopic Brow Lift
A modern, minimally invasive alternative, the endoscopic brow lift is suited for mild to moderate brow sagging. Using a series of tiny incisions hidden in the hairline, a small camera (endoscope) helps guide the surgeon to lift the forehead tissues, reposition the brows, and tighten underlying muscles. This method allows for quicker recovery and minimal scarring.
Temporal or Limited Incision Brow Lift
A temporal brow lift (also known as a limited incision brow lift) is a technique that focuses on lifting the temples and reducing drooping near the eyes. Ideal for patients with mild to moderate outer brow sagging, this technique offers a subtle, natural-looking enhancement with a shorter recovery time than full brow lifts.
Ideal Candidates for a Forehead Lift/Brow Lift
Individuals who are seeking to address specific aesthetic concerns related to their upper face, including sagging brows, forehead wrinkles, or a tired, aged appearance, can often benefit from a brow and forehead lift. Ideal candidates will be generally healthy non-smokers without any serious medical conditions. To learn more about your candidacy, please contact CARE Plastic Surgery today to schedule a consultation.
What to Expect During the Forehead Lift/Brow Lift Procedure
Depending on the brow lift technique being used, the procedure process and downtime may vary. At CARE Plastic Surgery, Dr. Coan utilizes both local and MAC anesthesia for optimal patient comfort. The procedure typically takes a few hours but can vary depending on other procedures that may be performed in conjunction. Recovery includes no exercise for 6 weeks after surgery, and results are evaluated at 3 months following surgery.
Recovery and Aftercare
Brow lift surgery is an outpatient procedure, so patients can return home after surgery to heal. Patients generally experience very little pain following a brow lift, though mild discomfort and a feeling of tightness throughout the forehead may be experienced. Swelling and bruising can occur during the first two weeks. We recommend patients refrain from any activity that will increase heart rate or blood pressure, including exercise, for six weeks following surgery. However, many people can return to sedentary jobs after about one week. Our team will provide you with specific aftercare instructions following your brow lift procedure.
Combining Forehead Lift with Other Facial Procedures
Combining a forehead lift with other facial procedures is often a popular option for patients looking to achieve comprehensive facial rejuvenation. By pairing a brow lift with treatments like blepharoplasty (eyelid surgery), facelift, skin resurfacing, or dermal fillers, patients can address multiple concerns at once, such as sagging brows, drooping eyelids, deep wrinkles, and loss of volume. If you are interested in learning more about comprehensive facial rejuvenation at CARE Plastic Surgery, please schedule a consultation today. Our team will be happy to work with you to create a personalized treatment plan to help you reach your unique aesthetic goals.
Risks and Potential Complications of Brow Lift Surgery
While brow lift surgery is generally safe and well-tolerated, as with any surgical procedure, there are potential risks and complications to be aware of. These can include temporary swelling, bruising, or mild discomfort around the brow and forehead area, which are common and typically resolve within a few weeks. In rare cases, there may be issues such as infection, changes in sensation, or scarring, but these are very uncommon with the skilled techniques we use. Dr. Coan and our experienced team are dedicated to minimizing these risks by carefully evaluating your health, customizing your procedure to your specific needs, and following strict aftercare guidelines.
Choosing the Right Plastic Surgeon for Your Forehead Lift
Selecting the right plastic surgeon is a crucial step in ensuring a successful brow lift and achieving the results you desire. It’s important to choose a skilled surgeon with ample experience performing brow lifts, as their expertise and training will directly impact the outcome of your surgery. Dr. Brian S.
